Picking and purchasing domain names

Seems like every contact I make and after we start talking, we end up discussing domain names. Keyword or no-keyword in the title? .Com or .info, etc? Where is the best place to purchase domains, etc.

So I figured it might be good to go over some of my prerequisites on domain name selection. I’m not saying that my way is correct, but if you’re interested, these are rules that I follow.

#1 I always go for .com and .net only. I NEVER go for .info or other extensions. I don’t care how cheap they are. .Coms are always preferred, but might be hard to nail with competition. If the .com is taken and the .net is available, I’ll see if the .com site is active. If it’s a squatter domain, I’ll usually pick up the .net since the .com is not ‘currently’ competing with me.

Creating a small backlink network

I’ve discussed a few strategies with other affiliate marketers over the years on how to create a backlink network for your sites. This is also heavily discussed and described well at Wealthy Affiliate.

The goal is to drive organic traffic to your ‘money site’ by improving your page rank score via backlinks. I personally like to drive traffic with a combination of organic and PPC traffic and not restrict myself to one or the other. The down side to this, is it can be difficult to fully see what’s working for you. If you’re doing PPC, you’ll want to be sure you’re capturing keywords somehow. By doing so, you’ll have a better grasp of how traffic is getting there and most importantly, what traffic is converting.

Ideas to improve EPN sites

Some Wealthy Affiliate friends asked me what I do for improving EPN type sites. Here is a small list of features that I like to do. Maybe they’ll help you!

Specific Categories. Get into sub categories that eBay doesn’t offer. Remember, you need to provide a benefit to the user. Why use your site vs. eBay’s interface? Creating sub categories in a tight niche can save the user time, and provide a better opportunity for sales. This is also a opportunity to find less competitive niches.

Provide a search cloud. BANS (worst software ever) and other EPN sites provides search functionality, but so does eBay. Using a search cloud, you can display popular searches within your site based on the niche you’re working. Again, providing a value added service to users.

PopShop redirect all links to your domain

I like to have all external affiliate links point back to my domain. I don’t want to advertise lots of external links to search bots so I do some basic link cloaking back to my domain and redirect. I wanted the same effect with my PopShop products. Luckily, PopShops provides this as a feature for Enterprise users.

A little background, PopShops is a great tool to quickly add products across various affiliate networks (CJ, ShareASale, GAN, etc). There is NOT easier way to add products to your site than PopShops, and I’m a huge fan!

To add link redirection you will need to do two things.

#1 Add a piece of code on all pages that have PopShop products.

Clicks and sales down, time to evaluate and adjust and react.

Starting in April, I noticed a significant dip in commissions, initially from EPN. Reviewing posts at the EPN forum, I started to see others with similiar observations and complaints. Coincidentally there was a reporting error (for a small range, commissions were double posted). Currently the sites and network that I have created has been incredibly steady. Earlier in the month I did not see a decrease in traffic or clicks, just a decrease in commissions.

As the month progressed, I started to see a dip in other areas. Google Adsense was showing a drop in clicks as well but earnings are still holding up? My Commission Junction stats were also showing similar results. Immediately I thought it could have been due to Google slap, but checking Google, all of my sites are still indexed, and I’m still receiving organic traffic. Like wise, my paid YSM clicks were down as well. What does this mean?
